What to Do While Waiting for Emergency Plumbing Repair Services

When a plumbing emergency strikes, panic can set in fast. A burst pipe, overflowing toilet, or sudden leak can cause major damage in a short amount of time. While you're waiting for a professional plumber to arrive, performing the following few quick actions can help minimize the damage and keep your home safe.

Shut Off the Water Supply

The very first thing you should do is stop the water from flowing.

If the issue is isolated, like a leaking toilet or faucet, shut off the water at the fixture valve. For major leaks or pipe bursts, turn off your home’s main water, usually located in the basement or near the water meter.

This step is critical for:

  • Slowing down water damage
  • Preventing flooding from getting worse
  • Making it safe for the plumber to start work quickly

If you're not sure where the shut-off valve is, it's a good idea to locate it before an emergency happens.

Turn Off Power in Affected Areas

If water is leaking near electrical outlets, appliances, or your circuit panel, turn off the power to that area immediately. Do not touch wet electrical devices. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix, so play it safe and shut off power until help arrives.

Contain the Water as Best You Can

Use towels, buckets, or a wet-dry vacuum to soak up water and stop it from spreading. Place a bowl under slow leaks and put down towels to protect hard wood floors or carpet.

If the leak is coming from the ceiling, poke a small hole to let it drain into a bucket. This can help prevent widespread ceiling damage.

Avoid Using Other Plumbing Fixtures

Until the emergency is under control, it’s best not to use sinks, toilets, or appliances that rely on your home’s water system. Continuing to run water can worsen the issue or add pressure to already damaged pipes.

Take Photos for Insurance

If there's visible water damage, document it via photo or video from your phone. This will help with insurance claims later and give your plumber a better idea of what happened if the source isn’t immediately obvious.

Stay Calm And Remember Help Is on the Way

Plumbing emergencies can be stressful but acting quickly and safely can prevent a bad situation from getting worse.

Once you’ve contained the problem, wait for your plumber in a dry area and keep others, especially children and pets, away from the damage.
