What to Know About Toilet Installation Before You Start

If you’re considering installing a new toilet, there are a few important things you need to know before you start. At Hilltop Plumbing & Heating Ltd., we’ve been taking care of the plumbing needs of folks around White Rock, Langley, and South Surrey for over 50 fabulous years. And we’re more than happy, dare we say excited, to share a couple of tips on the process.

First, you need to know that installing a toilet isn’t necessarily a beginner’s project. It involves a fair bit of knowledge about plumbing, carpentry, and occasionally a certain level of brute strength. But if you’re well versed in these areas or not faint-hearted about learning as you go, then it’s doable.

Secondly, understand that there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” type of toilet. You’ll have to determine your bathroom’s ‘rough-in’ measurement before buying your new fixture. That’s the distance from the wall to the floor drainage hole. Usually, it’s about 12 inches, but older homes might present some variance. A mismatch can lead to some severe issues.

What Tools Will You Need?

Your toolkit should include a wax ring, toilet mounting bolts, a level, a wrench, a hacksaw, and possibly a drill.

Is DIY Toilet Installation a Good Idea?

Remember that while DIY can be a great way to save cash, there’s no shame in reaching out for professional help if things get too complex. After all, a faulty toilet installation isn’t just a minor inconvenience, it is a serious problem that will lead to costly repairs.

So, whether you’re ready to tackle the toilet installation challenge head-on or you’d rather sit back and let the professionals swoop in – give us a call at Hilltop Plumbing.
